American Asthma FoundationResearch Grant AwardedThe Division of Biological Engineering's Dr Andreas Fouras, and Monash colleagues Professor Stuart Hooper (The Ritchie Centre), Professor Rob Lewis (Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science) and Dr Karen Siu (Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science) are the proud recipients of a 2010 American Asthma Foundation Research Program Grant, worth USD750,000. This represents only the second time this prestigious international grant has been awarded outside of North–America. The grant supports investigators in nonprofit research organisations to conduct innovative work directed towards uncovering the basic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of asthma. Although asthma is a disease of epidemic proportions, asthma can only be partially controlled by the best treatments available today. Most asthmatics do not die as a result of the disease but their daily lives are often spent coping with the symptoms. Asthma affects all age groups and is the most serious, chronic, disabling disease of children. The multi-disciplinary Monash team seeks to develop technology that will measure lung motion in fine spatial and temporal detail in specific lung regions. The success of such an aim will be key in producing ground breaking research into the mechanisms of asthma.
